My grandfather, Tony Zanette, (age 57 at the time)and his friend, Victor Salvatore (age 27) left for Alaska on August 26, 1959. Tony hunted in Alaska 3 times that I know of in his lifetime. I'm not sure what trip this was but he was traveling with his good friend, Victor Salvatore Jr. Victor ended up stranded due to a mechanical problem with his plane and was left on a river for 6 days. The pilot left to pick up my grandfather but they were forced to land the plane on a sandbar due to inclement weather. Here's the newspaper articles recounting the story. I have fond memories of my grandfather showing us slide presentations of his hunts and oh how I wish we would have recorded him because he was funny and his narration was really interesting.
